Hsu-Sun Scholarship
1. Purpose
To express his gratitude for the support and assistance he received from various scholarships during his academic journey, Academician Cho-yun Hsu decided to donate the prize money he received as the 2024 Tang Prize winner in Sinology to the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation. His hope is to encourage outstanding young students to engage in Sinology research.
This generous donation aims to support doctoral students in humanities with a focus on Sinology who have obtained Ph.D. candidacy. It enables them to conduct visiting research at academic institutions other than their enrolled universities, broadening their perspectives and laying a solid foundation for future research work.
2. Fields of Sponsorship
Doctoral dissertations in the humanities with a focus on Sinology.
3. Eligibility
Doctoral students enrolled in universities in North America or Europe who have obtained Ph.D. candidacy. Applicants must conduct their visiting research at academic institutions in the American Region or European Region.
4. Award Amount
1–2 recipients per year, each receiving US$35,000–US$50,000.
5. Duration of Award
6 to 12 months.
6. Application Period
Applications are accepted from July 1 to August 31 each year, and the results are announced by the end of December. The project must be started within six months following the announcement of the final results.
7. Required Application Materials
(1) Completed application form, including:
- Proposed doctoral dissertation topic and summary.
- Name of the academic institution and brief biography of the supervising scholar(s) for the proposed visiting research.
- Work plan for the proposed visiting research.
- The proposal must be written in English (as a general rule, not exceeding 10 pages). Abstracts in Chinese and English, as well as the expected date of completion of the dissertation, should be attached separately.
(2) Proof of Ph.D. candidacy or equivalent status issued by the academic department of the applicant’s enrolled university.
(3) Official transcripts issued by the applicant’s enrolled university.
(4) CV and list of publications in English.
(5) Two letters of recommendation, one of which must be written by the applicant’s dissertation advisor.
(6) Consent letter from the supervising scholar(s) at the proposed visiting research institution agreeing to supervise the applicant during the visit.
Note: Items (5) and (6) should be mailed directly to the Taipei headquarters of the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation in a sealed envelope and signed by the recommending scholars/supervising scholar(s). Alternatively, the recommending scholars/supervising scholar(s) may email a PDF copy of the signed letter to the following e-mail address: system@cckf.org.tw.
8. Points for Attention
(1) Applicants for this scholarship may also apply for doctoral fellowships from the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation.
(2) Recipients of this scholarship may also receive grants from other organizations.
(3) After the review results are confirmed, the list of awardees will be announced on the website of the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation, and the awardees’ departments and advisors will be notified by letter, and arrangements for signing the scholarship agreement will be made.
(4) The Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation will not provide reports from the reviewers.
(5) Awardees may not accept paid employment during the grant period.
9. Obligations of Awardees
(1) After completing the visiting research, awardees must provide a publicly accessible report on the research results within three months.
(2) The final draft of the awardees’ doctoral dissertation must acknowledge the support of the Chiang Ching-kuo International Academic Exchange Foundation Hsu-Sun Scholarship, and a copy of the dissertation must be sent to the Foundation.
(3) If the doctoral dissertation is published as a book, the book must acknowledge the support of the Chiang Ching-kuo International Academic Exchange Foundation Hsu-Sun Scholarship during the dissertation writing period, and a copy of the book must be sent to the Foundation.
