Institutional Enhancement Grants
Academic institutions are invited to apply for support to improve and strengthen their Chinese Studies programs in the humanities and social sciences. Priority will be given to institutions that already have graduate or undergraduate programs in Chinese Studies. Grants for new teaching positions are usually given for no more than three years, and matching funds from the sponsoring institutions are strongly recommended. The grants may include salary and fringe benefits, and should not exceed EUR140,000 for a three-year period.
Institutional Enhancement Grants will be evaluated according to the following criteria:
The grant's potential long-term impact.
The grant should help fund a new position, not fill an old position or add to a professor's existing course load.
Priority consideration will be given to those institutions which make a commitment to continue to fund the new position after the termination of the Foundation's grant.
Consideration will be given to balanced geographic distribution of the grants.
The Institutional Enhancement (IE) Grant Program is scheduled to be phased out. Applications for IE Grants are currently still being considered. However, no application will be accepted without a prior consultation with the Foundation leading to a positive appraisal of the project's practicality and importance.
The Foundation's grants provide support for research on Chinese Studies in the humanities and social sciences.
Funding is not provided for capital equipment (including computers and printers), building design, construction, or maintenance.
Funding is not available for university administrative costs including overhead or endowments.
The Foundation does not subsidize administrative expenses or the purchase of equipment.
Foundation funds can only be transferred to and managed by institutional accounts. Letters of support from the applicant's institution must express the institution's willingness to comply with these procedures.
With the exception of senior scholar grants, the Foundation does not supply funding for the salaries of project directors or co-directors.
The Foundation encourages applications with matching funds from other sources.
